I’m Kathleen, my husband is Patrick, and together we are undertaking a massive renovation as a result of catastrophic damage to our house from burst water pipes.
Ever hear the advice, “Buy the house that needs the most work on the best block, and make it what you want!” We took it to heart and landed a house in Pleasantville, NY – which really lives up to it’s name. The town is adorable, our neighbors are super friendly and caring, and we actually love living here!
We purchased our home in June of 2015, while I was 6 months pregnant with our son, Sean. All while feeling like a nesting T-Rex with a bladder control issue, I was ripping down wallpaper, painting cabinets, painting walls, and unpacking moving boxes while Pat and a large support network of family and friends did the demolition and rebuild work.
The house was built in 1959, and can feasibly also function as a bomb shelter. The walls are mostly cinderblock with plaster/metal laith. If you have ever wondered what task to give a hated enemy – tell them to try demolishing this type of a wall. I digress. We managed to get a lot of updates and renovations done, and the house was looking awesome! I will be proving this declaration with photos, I promise.
We were feeling our oats and even started considering renovations in the basement. In the meantime, we decided to take a much-needed long weekend to unwind and celebrate Valentine’s Day, our hard work, and enjoy time with the baby. We returned to a flooded house, caused by burst heat pipes. Imagine a 2 story sauna of mustiness. After some soul-searching and number crunching, we have decided to go beyond repairing just the damaged areas, and include a second and third story addition knowing that we will need it for our growing family. We have also decided (probably while we were drunk, I can’t remember) to do some much needed outdoor work as well!
We plan to keep this blog throughout the process and beyond to let you all follow along with us on the inevitable ups and downs. We hope to have a lot fun along the way and want to turn the lemons we were served into lemonade – the homemade kind!
A little background on each of us:
Kathleen graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2010 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design. Since graduating, she has been an interior designer at several firms/organizations in the NYC/Westchester area. She grew up loving everything creative and discovered interior design as a practical way to integrate beauty as function into our everyday lives. She loves tea, Frasier, HGTV, Australia, and everything family.
Patrick is an attorney working at a firm in New York City. He grew up in the Bronx, and laments the absence of sidewalks in Westchester every day. He can tell you any stat about any team, player, you name it for basically any sport. He has awesome skills on the barbecue and can whip up a mean omelette. His resume also includes an honorary degree in craft beerology.
We have a son, Sean Patrick, born in August of 2015, and he brings so much happiness and purpose to our lives. He is definitely the happiest, easiest of babies, and we are so thankful given the chaos that has been surrounding us lately!
There’s the little man!
We also have a dachshund/shih-tzu mix named Archer. He is seriously the cutest, most misbehaved dog you will ever meet! We love him.
